I'm often asked by my friends who their favorite historical figure is, and I always have the same answer: Li Bai, also known as the Poet Immortal. My love for this ancient Chinese poet began when I was a student in middle school. Our English teacher assigned us to write an essay about someone we admired, and I chose Li Bai without hesitation.
At first, it might seem strange that a foreigner like me would be fascinated by a Chinese poet from over 1,200 years ago. But there's something special about Li Bai that transcends time and language barriers. His poetry is not just beautiful; it's also full of passion, imagination, and a deep connection with nature.
Li Bai lived during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), which is often called China's "Golden Age" due to its flourishing arts and culture. As a member of the aristocracy himself, he had access to education and was well-versed in literature and history. However, his life wasn't without challenges - he faced exile twice due to political reasons.
Despite these setbacks, Li Bai continued to write poetry throughout his life. His works are characterized by their free-flowing style and vivid imagery. He often wrote about mountains (he loved them!), wine (he loved drinking!), rivers (he loved boats!), or even mythical creatures like dragons or phoenixes! These themes reflect his adventurous spirit and romantic nature.
One of my favorite poems by Li Bai is "Drinking Alone under the Moon." It speaks volumes about how one can find companionship even in solitude:
"I drink alone under the moon,
A solitary cup.
The moon shines bright on all around,
My shadow too."
This poem captures his carefree attitude towards life while simultaneously expressing loneliness - an intriguing contrast that resonates with many readers across centuries.
As an English speaker myself now living in China today,I appreciate how much more meaningful learning Chinese becomes when you understand its rich cultural background through figures like Li Bai。His poetry has inspired countless generations, including mine。
So if you ever get asked who your favorite historical figure is,don't hesitate - choose someone whose story inspires you regardless of where they come from。For me,that person will forever be 李白 -- The Poet Immortal!
