Introduction

Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer and navigator, is best known for his voyages to the Americas in 1492 and 1493. He is often credited with discovering America, although indigenous peoples had inhabited the continents for thousands of years before his arrival. This article will delve into Columbus's life, exploring his motivations for exploration and examining the impact of his voyages on world history.

Early Life

Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy around 1451. As a young man he traveled extensively throughout Europe as a merchant sailor. In 1470 he moved to Portugal where he married into a wealthy family and became involved in trade expeditions along the west coast of Africa.

The Idea Behind His Voyage

In the late 15th century European explorers were seeking new trade routes to Asia. The Silk Road was long established but it was controlled by Venice which limited its use for other nations. The Portuguese were making progress down the African coast but this route was also being closely watched by Venice.

Motivated by financial gain and fueled by ambition, Columbus proposed an alternative route to Asia: sail west across the Atlantic Ocean instead of going south around Africa or north through Russia. This idea may have been inspired by knowledge from ancient Greeks who believed that there existed landmasses beyond Europe's horizon.

Preparations & First Voyage (1484-1493)

Columbus spent several years trying to secure funding from monarchs across Europe for his ambitious plan. After much persistence he finally secured support from King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile in Spain on January 17th, 1492.

Columbus set sail on August 3rd that year with three ships: La Niña (the "girl"), La Pinta (the "painter"), and Santa Maria ("Saint Mary"). They sailed across what is now known as The Caribbean Sea landing on October 12th at Guanahani in present-day Bahamas which they named San Salvador.

Impact Of His Voyages

Columbus's voyage marked a turning point in world history because it opened up new opportunities for Europeans both economically & culturally:

Economic Impact: By establishing direct contact between two major hemispheres - Old World & New World - Europeans gained access to valuable resources such as gold silver spices & plants.

Additionally European colonization led to significant population growth due increased availability food resources especially after introduction crops like maize corn potatoes etc., brought back from New World.
