Nüwa Mends the Heavens: The Story Behind China's First Female Deity
In a world where gods and goddesses ruled the skies, the earth, and even the seas, Nüwa stands out as a unique figure in Chinese mythology. She is not only one of China's first female deities but also an embodiment of maternal love, wisdom, and creativity. This story is part of "China Myths 100," a collection that delves into the rich tapestry of Chinese folklore.
Introduction to Nüwa
Nüwa was born from a drop of blood shed by Pangu, the creator god who separated yin and yang to create heaven and earth. According to legend, she emerged with her male counterpart Fuxi on Mount Kungtang at dawn on New Year's Day.
The Birth of Humanity
Nüwa created humans using clay or mud from Mount Kungtang after observing how animals reproduced themselves through mating rituals. However, she realized that humans were too prone to violence so she made them live for only 120 years before dying due to their destructive nature.
Repairing Heaven
When two dragons fought each other causing holes in heaven's vaults (the sky), Nüwa came up with an ingenious solution by melting five colored stones (red jade for red sandalwood) which hardened into pillars that plugged these holes effectively repairing heaven.
Creating Animals
To fill Earth with life after creating humanity but realizing it was barren without any creatures besides humans living there; Nüwa used animal parts sewn together with silk threads from spiders' webs - thus creating all sorts of animals like birds & beasts & fish etc., filling Earth completely once more making it abundant in fauna like never before ever seen since creation itself began anew once again upon this fresh beginning full circle turning back around towards eternity while completing what had been started long ago already finished just now yet still always ongoing forevermore—always—never-endingly…
