In the heart of the Forbidden City, hidden behind a waterfall and guarded by a secret passage, lies the last emperor's most treasured possession – his secret garden.
The story begins in 1911 when China was on the brink of revolution. As foreign powers threatened to tear apart his country, Puyi, then just six years old, was forced to abdicate from his throne.
After spending several years living with his aunt in Manchuria, Puyi returned to Beijing under Japanese occupation and became their puppet emperor during World War II.
During this time, he discovered an abandoned temple surrounded by lush greenery and decided to create a sanctuary for himself amidst chaos.
Here he cultivated not only plants but also animals like birds and fish creating a harmonious ecosystem that brought him solace from the turmoil outside these walls.
When Japan surrendered in 1945, Puyi lost power once again but held onto his garden as it reminded him of happier times as well as provided comfort during difficult periods following imprisonment for war crimes until 1950 when he renounced all claims to imperial status and adopted a new name – Zhou Xiaoyu - returning to civilian life.
Now free from politics' shackles he could fully immerse himself into gardening which became an escape for both body & mind allowing him time away from public scrutiny while nurturing nature around him peacefully coexisting with its inhabitants fostering growth within this sacred space where history would never be forgotten yet love flourished among flora & fauna alike so too did hope within man who had seen many trials & tribulations stand strong against adversity through resilience of spirit guided by faithfulness towards nature’s beauty whose whispers spoke words of wisdom reminding us there is always light at end tunnel even darkest moments darkness will pass leaving room for growth renewal healing peace tranquility serenity harmony balance joy happiness love
